When I was in standard 5, my mother took me to a salon and got my hair shaved. Her explanation then was I will have better hair growth and my hair will be dense. And while I felt awkward going to school with a shaved head, I always wondered if all this was worth. My hair right now is pretty thick but I don’t know if it was because of shaving. Before you shave your child’s head for denser hair growth, you need to get to the facts. Can shaving head increase the hair re-growth? Let us learn it from trichologist Dr Neha Nanda, Max Hospital, Delhi.

If you shave your hair to allow new hair growth in, your effort is only going to be useless. The growth of your hair is mainly determined by genetics and shaving your hair will not make your hair grow any thicker or faster. Shaving will not increase the diameter of hair follicles and grow back the hair you have lost. Your hair follicles are deep inside the skin and shaving your head does not affect the hair follicles in any way.

What actually happens with shaving

But what occurs to be a dense hair regrowth after shaving hair is only an illusion. With new hair growth, the short hair shaft becomes more noticeable (since it has a blunt tip due to shaving). This makes the hair appear thicker, but your hair, in reality, won’t be any thick. Also, the new hair growth will be undamaged and healthy as it is not exposed to chemical treatments or regular day to day wear and tear. This gives the appearance of a finer and thicker hair growth. However, having your hair cut regularly can revive the ends and make your hair look healthy. Further, if you have dandruff shaving your head can make sense as it will help keep your scalp clean for some time.

Bottomline—If your hair does not grow seeing a dermatologist or dietician can help as some hair problems can be a sign of more serious problems. Here are foods you must eat for thicker and stronger hair.
